General Hospital cast clash over COVID-19 mandates spills into public view

Ingo Rademacher has been vocal in the past about his stance on various social issues. Rademacher has played the role of Jasper “Jax” Jacks since 1996. His castmate, Nancy Lee Grahan, has played the role of Alexis Davis since that same year and is equally- if not more- vocal about her political views on the opposite side of the spectrum. The two have now have made headlines over COVID-19 mandates on the set of GH. In the midst of it all co-star Steve Burton has revealed his COVID-19 diagnosis as well as that the exposure occurred on the set.

Nancy Lee Grahan Vocally Supportive of Workplace Protections

Grahan has been vocal about the importance of vaccinations and mask mandates throughout the pandemic. She recently lauded a decision by the network owner, Disney, to mandate vaccinations and masks for a good portion of their workforce. Actors such as those on the cast of GH are members of the SAG/AFTRA actor’s unions, which dictate the safety measures and precautions that actors and studios must adhere to and are not currently mandated to be vaccinated. Grahan recently posted a video of her a question she submitted to current candidates for union president, actor Matthew Modine, and actress Fran Drescher. In the submission, Grahan shared her opinion that those not vaccinated put others at risk and should bear the burden of medical costs incurred by the actor’s union as a whole. Ingo Rademacher Doubles Down on Anti-Vaxx Mandates

Rademacher has been vehemently against vaccinations, or at the very least vocal about their lack of efficacy, frustration with mandates by the government, including precautions such as mask-wearing. Rademacher’s stance has earned him ire from particularly vocal fans on Twitter. Things seemed to escalate when the actor posted videos of him at an anti-vaccination rally in California, followed by a vigorous defense of his views. The Twitter hashtag #FireIngo has grown popular amongst the fan base most bothered by his stance on workplace safety. Rademacher went on to double down on his stance and remarked that he would never wish to harm somebody’s livelihood over their decision whether or not to get a vaccine or any other personal decision they chose to make.

Fellow Cast-Member Steve Burton Tests Positive For COVOD-19, Blames Exposure on Set

In the midst of all this, another cast member from GH, Steve Burton, tested positive for COVID-19. The actor, not known to be vocal about his political views but rumored to have a more conservative viewpoint, not only announced his COVID-19 test results but made it clear that while GH has testing protocols in place, he was exposed and infected on the set. Burton has assured fans that he is on the mend and only has mild symptoms. It is telling that the usually private actor made a point to share the details during the firestorm.[]

Owner of ABC Network, Disney Has Begun Instituting Vaccinations, Masks and Testing Mandates

None of the four daytime soap operas have addressed the COVID-19 pandemic in storylines. However, last year’s Nurse’s Ball, an in-story charity gala on GH, was dedicated to front-line workers. Donations were solicited and made by various characters during a telethon, with the stated goal made to ensure adequate supplies were being received by those putting themselves in harm’s way. Ironically, GH has had a pristine record during the pandemic and has been lauded for the safety precautions and testing protocls in place to protect the cast and crew. GH was the first of any Disney owned property to go back into production last summer. Disney TV’s president, Dana Walden, praised GH for setting the standard for the studio when it retuned to production. Of the four soap operas only GH has avoided a shut down in production for COVID-19 exposures.

Grahan and Rademacher’s Political Views Have Led to Public Clashes in Past

The two have clashed on Twitter before, with the situation escalating to the point in which Grahan blocked her co-star on Twitter. The two fought again when Maurice Bernard and Rademacher appeared to mock Grahan during an Instagram Live post. In the post, Rademacher complained about an upcoming shoot with a scene and referred to a video monitor with Graham’s image on it, followed by laughter between the two male stars. Bernard and Grahan addressed the matter, with Bernard offering a public apology while Grahan acknowledged that a conversation between the two actors did take place.

Over 40 Cast Members in High Risk Age Groups

According to the CDC’s website, the baseline for transmission/infection with COVID-19 is basically the same for all age groups. Age howeve, does play a very big role in the progression of the illness once somebody is infected. The age group of 18-29 is used as the reference group on which the data for likelihood of hospitalisation and death among COVID cases is based on.

People ages 30-49 are twice as likely as people 18-29 to require hospitalisation. People aged 50 to 64 years old are 4 times as likely than those 18-29 years old to require hospitalisation. Those between ages of 65 to 74 are 6x (six times) as likely to be hospitalized due to a COVID-19 infection.

The likelihood of death resulting from a COVID 19 infection is four times as likely for someodby 30 to 39. That likelihood increases to ten times (10X) for those ages 40-49. For those aged 50 to 64 the likelihood of death from COVID-19 infection increase to thirty-five times. In cases where patients were between the ages of 65 and 74, the chances of a patient dying was ninety-five times (95X) more likely than that of an 18 to 29 year old.

The vast majority of General Hospital’s cast members fall into high-risk categories. Here are some current cast-members, frequent recurring cast-members, some recent guest stars and a few cast members likely to return as the soap opera approaches its 60th anniversary.Actors By Age Group And Risk
